Galeotto Manfredi and the Tragic Night in Faenza

Italian CondottieriGaleotto Manfredi and the Tragic Night in Faenza

A respected condottiero and, at the same time, a man of letters and a lover of music. Of good and loyal nature, though prone to anger. A man of the Renaissance even before being a soldier. His story is recounted by the chroniclers of his city, Faenza, primarily for the romantic aura that surrounds his loves and his tragic end. Invited into his chamber by his jealous wife, he was killed there by four assassins. Tradition tells that for a long time, near a large fireplace in that room, there remained a reddish stain on the wall bearing the imprint of his hand as he tried to defend himself from the attackers.

Apr.RomagnaTakes part in the conspiracy that concludes with the killing of his enemy Girolamo Riario. He remains the only Romagnol lord to oppose the restoration of the Riario in Imola and Forlì; in the second locality he favors in his pretensions his nephew Antonio Maria Ordelaffi. In the situation he relies increasingly on the Venetians, attracting greater enmity from the Bentivoglio and their main supporter Ludovico Sforza.
MayRomagnaDue to his pro-popular policy many nobles plot against him with his wife, wounded in her pride as a woman: Galeotto has, in fact, brought from Ferrara to Faenza his mistress Cassandra Pavoni disguised as a Camaldolese nun. At the end of the month his wife has a secret conversation with some conspirators in a city church; she pretends to be ill, has her husband come to her room and with the collaboration of 4 Bolognese assassins pounces on him stabbing him in the belly. The Manfredi is buried at night; two days later 2 assassins are beheaded and quartered and their heads will be stuck on two lances to be placed on top of the town hall tower where they will remain for many months. Medallion by Sperindio Savelli. Angelo Lapi dedicates various Latin poems to him; friend of Poggio Bracciolini, Angelo Poliziano and Marsilio Ficino. Vincenzo Monti writes a tragedy in verse inspired by his story; Lamberto Caffarelli composes a scenic poem for music entitled “Galeotus”.

MESSERI-CALZI

-“Militi strenuo ordinumque ductorum valentissimo.” ARLUNO

CAMPANA
