Tommaso degli Obizzi’s Campaigns under Edward III and the Papal States

Italian CondottieriTommaso degli Obizzi’s Campaigns under Edward III and the Papal States

Among the most renowned condottieri of his time, Tommaso degli Obizzi served the papacy, the Angevins, the Scaligeri, and the House of Este. A distinctive feature of his military career is that much of it unfolded in England, where he served under King Edward III. In this role, he fought against the Scots led by David Bruce, playing a key part in the English victory at the Battle of Neville's Cross. During this battle, the King of Scotland was captured after being wounded in the face by two arrows. For his valor in this engagement, Tommaso degli Obizzi was awarded the Order of the Garter—a distinction that, until 1600, the English granted to only three Italians, all of them blood princes: Federico and Guidobaldo da Montefeltro, Dukes of Urbino, and Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy.
