The Hatchet and the Hegemon: The Violent Life of Boffo da Massa

Italian CondottieriThe Hatchet and the Hegemon: The Violent Life of Boffo da Massa

He was a capitano di ventura who, as a fuoriuscito—that is, a rebel against the Papal State—managed, with the help of other condottieri such as John Hawkwood (Giovanni Acuto) and Lucio Lando (Lutz von Landau), to carve out a small autonomous lordship for himself in the Marche, in the territory of Fermo. What is distinctive is that, unlike many fourteenth-century mercenaries, far better known for their exploits, Boffo da Massa succeeded in leaving a significant memory of himself in local history. In fact, three novels have been published about this figure, so complex that he receives a substantially different treatment in each of them. In one of these, he appears as the “Achilles of his time,” invincible in tournaments and a man sensitive to feminine charm; in the other two, with varying tones, he is always portrayed as morally impoverished and opportunistic. His end is tragic. He is killed in his castle with a blow from a hatchet by hired assassins sent by the commune of Fermo, which had been threatened by his raids.

PALLOTTINI
