He takes Castelnuovo Scrivia and destroys its castle. He reinforces its defenses with infantry and cavalry, receives refugees and displaced persons, and advances towards Tortona, seizing the castle of Villa on the Scrivia, the last outpost controlled by the rebel Pavia forces. In October he launches an expedition towards Voghera and Retorbido, setting fire to and destroying several localities, capturing Buscaglia da San Nazaro and other family members in exchange for the fortress of Calcababbio. The action fails when the inhabitants of Voghera arrest one of Buscaglia’s sons. He prepares an ambush on the road to Castellaro, advances with few cavalry; the inhabitants sally forth, dal Verme feigns retreat to draw them into the ambush. One hundred enemies are killed and many wounded; seventy prisoners, with looted livestock, are taken to Tortona, but released except for three leaders and three others who die wounded in Tortona’s prisons. Luchino dal Verme enters the pay of the Venetians with the approval of Bernabò and Galeazzo Visconti, as well as the support of Francesco Petrarca. The contract is stipulated at the beginning of the month in Milan following a meeting with Raffaello Caresini at his house of San Michele al Muro Rotto. He is granted a monthly allowance of 800 ducats and a command of 100 horses and 150 infantry. His task is to proceed to Candia (Crete), which has rebelled against the Serenissima by some Venetian patricians excluded from the city magistracies. His men are assured free transport both ways. Three months’ pay is advanced to Luchino dal Verme and his men. The Venetians also pressure the Scaliger to return the goods confiscated from him at that time: the answer is negative. |

About one hundred soldiers detach to sack the area; they are all killed; their tongues and genitals are cut off and placed on their buttocks as mockery. Luchino dal Verme reorganizes his men and advances against the opponents gathered on the mountains. The campaign following the landing of dal Verme’s troops is rapid and decisive. The enemy feudal levies cannot withstand the mercenaries under his command, who are also assisted by contingents of Bohemian engineers. When the enemies are forced down to the plain due to lack of provisions, he confronts them decisively and routs them, inflicting heavy losses. Having destroyed the colonists’ army at Stromboli, he allows his soldiers to sack the villages; he enters the capital Candia with few soldiers and prevents the rest of the troops from entering by closing the city gates. A revolt is instigated by Martino da Rimini and Giovannello Visconti; the soldiers are given two months’ pay to calm them; the two leaders are executed once the mutiny is suppressed. The rebel leaders flee; some are killed by peasants, others are captured and beheaded. | ||

CIPOLLA
