Foreign Condottieri
War Captains from Medieval Europe in the Service of Italian States
A collection of articles devoted to condottieri of foreign origin who operated in the Italian peninsula between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. Englishmen such as John Hawkwood, Germans such as Albrecht Sterz, Hungarians, Albanians, French, Spanish, and captains from the Slavic lands: men who crossed the Alps or the Mediterranean to sell their military expertise to popes, lords, and republics. The articles reconstruct their biographies, campaigns, alliances, and fates, placing them in the geopolitical context of late-medieval Italy.
